This report examines India’s obligations under the ICCPR, highlighting systemic barriers to civic participation. Despite its democratic framework, unchecked political financing, judicial overreach, and gender inequality undermine fundamental rights.
Key concerns include (1) electoral disparities due to opaque funding and executive influence; (2) erosion of judicial autonomy, limiting democratic oversight; (3) socioeconomic discrimination restricting women’s education, employment, and healthcare; and (4) gender-based violence and political exclusion stifling women’s civic engagement.
This report urges India to enhance electoral transparency, reinforce judicial independence, expand opportunities for women, and strengthen protections against gender-based violence to uphold its ICCPR commitments.
